Starting position

The importance of human-machine interaction has risen continually in the last years. On the one hand, the technological progress has a great influence on the development and engineering of technological systems. On the other hand, the roles and functions of technology are changing, and so do that of the humans interacting with these systems.


The research training group has the aim to develop and integrate methods, procedures and tools in order to investigate the human-machine interaction already in the early phases of the engineering of technological systems. Data, conclusions and models on human-machine-interaction shall be used to develop methods and tools for the prospective design of nearly optimal human-machine-systems. Another objective is the formulation of heuristics, best practices and prototypes.

Research approach

In addition to selected domains of human-machine interaction (vehicle control, process control as well as interactive consumer products), the research programme focuses on the most important domain-crossing problems of the prospective design of human-machine-interaction. The enhancement of the dialogue and the exchange of know-how and methods between the participating disciplines are essential to determine the success of the research training group.

Study programme

The study programme will give the PhD students a structurized and specific support for their research work. Special lectures are offered in order to teach missing methodical basics and profile events are organised enabling the PhD students to have a look into problems of other participating disciplines, which counteract the necessary specialization in the doctoral work. Additionally, interdisciplinary abilities are taught. Corresponding to the professional origin and knowledge of each PhD student a course programme is established in cooperation with the advisors that is adjusted to the chosen topic. So it is possible to create a basis fo the interdisciplinary needs of the research work. This interdisciplinary approach is supported by the constitution of tuition teams. A large programme inviting guest scientists as well as stays abroad of the PhD students will improve the integration into the international scientific world.
